67 A Portrait of the Title as a Meme

   Joyce and Popular Culture is a subject not often yielding satisfying results. Is Joyce still for the select and selecter few? Perhaps we are looking in the wrong direction. The title of Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man crops up in many different guises, in literature, art, film, photograpy and other fields of human creativity. This paper will explore part of the wealth of derivative, rehashed or downright copied instances of the Joycean title, from the well-known Dylan Thomas collection of short stories Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog, to John Lennon’s quip A Portrait of the Asshole as a Madman, and from a recent Irish Times book review (8 December 2015), titled Joshua Cohen: Portrait of the Author as a Monkey Tied to a Typewriter and CCTV, to the 1969-1972 street painting by artist Keith Arnatt, with the title Portrait of the Artist as a Shadow of His Former Self.

   Is de abstract van een nooit gegeven paper op een willekeurig Joyce-congres. Ever since Joyce denk je bij de woorden ‘a portrait of the artist’ inmiddels meer aan zijn boek dan aan een zelfportret van een schilder, fotograaf, tekenaar of beeldhouwer. De titel van de Bildungsroman is na zo’n honderd jaar op de intellectuele bestsellerlijsten van hoofd en hart zo ingesleten dat hij een heel eigen leven is gaan leiden. Het is een stukje gezonken cultuurgoed geworden, een meme, die blootstaat aan allusies van hier tot gunter. Dat begon al bij Joyce zelf, die in 1932 een op Coleridge gebaseerde fictieve autobiografische parodie maakte over het reilen en zeilen van zijn Ulysses, getiteld A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Mariner.
   Mijn ongehouden lezing moest verluchtigd worden met lichtbeelden uit alle hoeken en gaten van het internet, ter illustratie van de waslijst titels die alludeerden aan het boek.

   Etc. Enz. Om nog maar te zwijgen van de academische Joyceaanse verhandelingen die de titel verminken, allemaal in de overtuiging origineel te zijn, zoals bij wijze van enkel voorbeeld Ritratto dell’artista malata. Patografia reumatologica di James Joyce (1882-1941) van ene dokter L. Ventura.
   En dan heb je ook nog vele foto’s en schilderijen die zo heten, van Jerry Ross, Kendell Geers, Maria Kapajeva (als ‘Young Woman’, een serie), Berenice Abbott (idem) etc. enz. (die niet noodzakelijkerwijs van Joyce afgeleid hoeven te zijn natuurlijk, al is de foto uit 1930 van Berenice Abbott met de vervorming uit 1950 een ander verhaal). En een abstract beeldhouwwerk van Alexander Calder. En dan zag ik ergens ook nog A short story/portrait of the artist as a young woman van Sandra Cisneros. Een stuk over Quentin Moore dat zo heet, en een verzamelalbum van Louis Armstrong. Het houdt niet op.
   Ook een zelfverwijzende autoparodie ontbreekt niet: A Selfie of the Artist as a Young Man, gemaakt door Dennis Baron toen in 2013 het woord ‘selfie’ door de Oxford English Dictionary tot woord van het jaar werd gekozen en hij een interessante geschiedenis van het fenomeen schreef. Als het woord ‘selfie’ in 1916 tot woord van het jaar was gekozen (vermoedde Baron), had Joyce een andere titel voor zijn eerste roman gekozen. Maar welke? Dat zegt hij er niet bij.

   Een zee om te drinken!
   En dat zou ik allemaal in gegist bestek uiteenzetten in de standaard toebemeten vijftien minuten spreektijd inclusief verplichte problemen met de techniek vooraf en opmerkingen van toehoorders die zichzelf graag horen spreken na afloop voor een zich ver- en immer verdergapend publiek.
   Dus zeg nu zelf, hoe kun je zo’n monumentale, wereldberoemde, klokklinkende titel anders vertalen dan als Zelfportret van de kunstenaar als jonge man?
